Since Sezzle pays the merchant in full when orders are placed (not when you pay them off), the merchant considers the order to be paid in full. This means they will issue a refund just like you paid on a credit or debit card - if you are eligible for a full refund, they'll issue a full refund. However, since they don't know how much you've paid to Sezzle, the refund is actually sent to Sezzle for us to apply to your payment plan.
Once the merchant issues a refund through Sezzle, your Sezzle order is immediately updated to reflect the refund. Additionally, we send you an email detailing any changes to your order. You can also view all refund details by logging into your account and viewing the details of the order.
Starting with the final (or fourth) installment and working backward, our system compares the amount due and the amount the merchant refunded to Sezzle to reduce, cancel, or refund installments. We will always first try and cancel or reduce unpaid installments before crediting any funds back to your original payment method. This prevents you from receiving a credit only to have another installment be charged later.
If the merchant issues store credit, no changes will be made to your Sezzle order. You will still be responsible for all payments, as you are now essentially paying off a gift card. Additionally, if a merchant refund is issued via cash or a third party such as Venmo or PayPal, a refund will not be issued to your Sezzle account.
You can see some sample refund scenarios in the table below.
Order Total | Amount Paid | Amount Due | Refund Amount | Amount Refunded to Original Payment Method |
100 € | 25 € | 75 € | 25 € | 0 €. The fourth installment (of 25 €) is canceled entirely, and the second and third installments are still due. |
100 € | 25 € | 75 € | 51 € | 0 €. The third and fourth installments are canceled entirely (50 € total) and the second installment is reduced by 1 €. |
100 € | 25 € | 75 € | 76 € | 1 €. The second, third, and fourth installments are canceled entirely (75 € total). |
100 € | 25 € | 75 € | 100 € |
25 €. All outstanding installments are canceled, and the one that was paid is completely refunded. |
If your order qualifies for a refund to your original payment method, instead of installments only being reduced or canceled, the refund typically appears on your statement within 10 business days from the date you receive the email from Sezzle.
Depending on your payment method, our refunds can either appear in amounts equal to each installment or as a lump-sum. We recommend checking for refunds from Sezzle instead of looking for a certain dollar amount.
Finally, if you paid for an order with multiple payment methods (like using two different cards), your refund may be split between those payment methods. For example, if half of your order was paid on a card ending in 1111, the other half was paid on a card ending in 2222, and the merchant issued a full refund, you would receive two refunds on the card ending in 1111 and two refunds on the card ending in 2222.
